Paint.NET is a program that not many people know about coz it isn't advertised but came on my laptop and have been using it for 2 years now. it is much simpler than photoshop but has a hell of a lot more than microsoft paint and you can add plugins and make some pretty cool images. there is also a massive forum that i found where they help improve it, give tutorials and show pics. here are some of mine.
